Welcome to Milcom 2001

MILCOM 2001 marks the 20th year of this premier Military Communications Conference and promises to be one of the best. As General Chair, I invite you to participate in the conference being held October 28 – 31, 2001 in suburban Washington, D.C.

MILCOM 2001 is sponsored by the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Communications Society and the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA). The DOD sponsors the security for the classified portion of the conference. EDS and The MITRE Corp. are pleased to be co-hosting this year’s conference, and we are privileged to have Lt. Gen. Harry Raduege, Director of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) as the Senior DOD Advisor.

In the twenty years since this conference was first held, communications systems and technology have made incredible progress. Capabilities that we could barely conceive and hope for have been realized, and in ways we could not imagine. The communications systems of the new century will be ubiquitous. Utilizing the latest technologies in networks, signaling and transmission, the emerging systems will connect the commanders and the war fighters to the sources of information to form a rapid and effective fighting force. The theme of MILCOM 2001, Communications for Network-Centric Operations, Creating the Information Force will be the focus of the technical sessions and exhibits that will provide a preview of the capabilities to be available to the 21st century warrior.

MILCOM 2001 will have over 60 unclassified and classified technical sessions, several timely panels, six tutorials on important technical topics and several very distinguished speakers. 80 industry exhibitors will demonstrate their latest technologies and systems.

The social program will offer an opportunity to renew acquaintances and sample some of Washington’s most interesting features, including the Monday evening outing at the Museum of American History. For spouses, there will be several daytime tours to interesting locations in the Washington area.

Please join us for what is sure to be a stimulating technical conference and a unique opportunity to talk with leaders in technology, government and industry. I look forward to seeing you at MILCOM 2001.
