This well known area is approximately 45 minutes from the Monterey Peninsula. The trip takes you down Highway 1, which was built in the 1930’s as a WPA project. This curvy road hangs over the rocky coastline and then weaves back into a dark Redwood Forest. Comfortable walking shoes and casual clothes along with your camera are required for this trip. This area has cast a poetic spell on many of its visitors and residents.
Artists and “hippies” have been coming to this area since the earthquake of 1906 and have made this a great place to find unique and unusual handcrafted gifts. Today you will begin a fun filled day of shopping and touring of Carmel. Your first stop will be at the Carmel Mission. This was the first of the nine missions that Father Junipero Serra was sent here to build for the Franciscans. The mission was originally to be in Monterey, but was moved to Carmel for the good soil, water and to avoid the Spanish soldier’s bad influence on the native Indians. Your next stop will be in the heart of Carmel, this quaint little town made famous by ex-mayor, Clint Eastwood, is a Mecca for restaurants and shopping. Carmel is one mile square with a population of less than 5000 people who have no street addresses, no street lights and no schools. Your guide will discuss the local “color: and a few famous homes. Frank Lloyd Wright designed a very special home directly on the ocean and it was the home of Sandra Dee in the movie a “Summer Place.” This area has long been used by Hollywood for many of its shooting locations. You will enjoy lunch at Forge in the Forest. After lunch, you will have the opportunity to exercise your legs and purses. The boutique shops, art galleries and antique shops are plentiful. The plaza includes stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Louis Vuitton, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor. Carmel and its charm will welcome you back many, many times. Once the day is over and everyone’s shopping bags are full, you will gather back at the Plaza where the shuttle will return you to your hotel.
