CDMA2000 Cellular Simulator and its Government/Military Applications
Shyy,Dong-JyeThe MITRE Corporation
The CDMA2000 cellular network has been deployed worldwide for nine years. Their underlying CDMA technology has also been considered by various government/military programs because it has the advantages of all-IP network, proven technology, proven performance in a propagation challenging environment, and high spectrum efficiency. MITRE has built a CDMA2000 cellular simulator to support internal and external projects. Within MITRE, the simulator has analyzed the CDMA capacity improvement of deploying soft handoff optimization, interference cancellation, and antenna array. The simulator also has applications in many government/military programs. Examples include National Communication System (NCS) Wireless Priority Service (WPS), NAVY Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), DISA Louisiana Roaming Emergency Communications Network (LA Recon) and NORTHCOM Disaster Communication. This paper presents the simulator architecture, implementation of CDMA features and simulation results. Specially, the capacity comparison of terrestrial and over-the-satellite cellular architectures is addressed. Also discussed are the considerations of deploying UAV-based CDMA base stations.
